SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING OVERVIEW* (Diocese of Syracuse NY)

VIRTUS:  ADULT AWARENESS TRAINING

The VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children” live training program teaches adults how to protect children by making participants aware of the signs of child abuse, the methods by which offenders commit abuse, the reporting procedures for suspected abuse and the steps we take to build and maintain safe environments for our children.  All clergy, all religious and all employees of the diocese as well as any volunteer who comes into contact with children are required to attend this training.  A criminal background check is also mandated.  Recertification and an updated criminal background check are required every five years.  Employees and volunteers must complete a training session within 60 days from the start of their duties.

“Protecting God’s Children” sessions are held regularly throughout our diocese.  Please go to www.syracusediocese.org and click on Child & Youth Protection/Training to view the schedules.
